In this heartwarming and hilarious comedy, María Elena García is excited to connect with her homeland and visit her extended family in Puerto Rico for the first time. María has grown up with an intense love for the island and even majored in Puerto Rican studies in college. Upon her arrival, and much to her surprise, María isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms. Many consider her an American—a gringa. If she’s a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, is she a somebody anywhere? On her journey to fit in, María muddles through misperceptions and misadventures while searching for what we all seek: belonging.

Nota del Director / A note from the Director

La Gringa (Spanish) is the story of a young women whose identity is caught between two worlds. María was born and raised in New York, but her roots are in Puerto Rico, where her parents were born, and where her extended family still lives. Below, Director Ernesto Luna Camargo shares why María’s story hits home.

“[When I read La Gringa (Spanish)], I immediately connected with the characters. Just before we started rehearsals, I was talking with friends of mine, all immigrants from different countries. Somebody asked me how I’m feeling, being an immigrant. And I said, ‘I feel like I don’t have a homeland anymore.’ Because when you move, your home is in another place. You keep your roots, but you are in another place. And that’s a conflict many people have—where do you belong after you’ve moved?

We call it destierro (exile). It’s like a plant you pull from the ground and put in another place. And there is a lot of suffering because when you leave your country, you leave your family, you leave your friends, you leave everything—your food, the smells, the language—everything. Many people will be touched by what happens in La Gringa (Spanish).”

“We are thrilled Ernesto is making his CPT mainstage directorial debut—this is a big step for Teatro Público de Cleveland and a testament to the growth of the ensemble and the individual artists who comprise the company. La Gringa is a beautiful story and, fun fact, the longest running Off-Broadway Spanish language play. We all long to fit in, to find home, to know who we truly are—longing is inherent in our search to belong. This play is hilarious and touching—an exciting exploration of our yearning for home, acceptance, and a true understanding of what’s in our heart.”

-Raymond Bobgan, CPT Executive Artistic Director

Teatro Público estuvo cocinando… / Teatro Público has been in the kitchen…

Not only have we been hard at work fine-tuning our skills and artistic talents, challenging ourselves to create original pieces, welcoming new members, and learning new roles on, and behind, the stage—but we have taken a huge step in the structure of our company’s leadership! Under the guidance and mentorship of CPT staff (thank you for everything Faye and Raymond!), our company has worked hard to empower Teatro Público members to take on formal leadership roles within the company. From strategic consulting meetings to internal group meetings, we have invested a considerable amount of time and energy in creating mission and vision statements that reflect our goals and values, learning best practices from other similar Latino theatre companies, and understanding our own group’s unique needs and talents. We are excited and empowered to now have a leadership committee that oversees the company in all respects. Elections were held and we are proud to announce that our Co-Chairs are Mónica A. Cerpa Zúñiga and Jason Estremera, and our Vice Chair is Alisha M. Caraballo. They are committed to excellence and are dedicated to upholding the bylaws we worked so hard to create for the group. Thank you for being part of our journey, your support means the world to us.
